Like many of the early-90’s bands that rose to major prominence, Black Crowes are a band I liked at first, but fell off my radar when I became an indie-snob in the mid-90’s. I briefly re-visited an appreciation for them in the early 2000’s, purchased their first 4 albums in the Sho’ Nuff boxset, but then I sold those albums. Fast forward to 2021, and suddenly, I can’t get enough. I attribute that to hearing about the Shake Your Money Maker deluxe edition. Their first LP is a masterpiece, and re-visiting them prompted me to dive headlong into their catalog.
Black Crowes are a fascinating band, seemingly driven by the polar opposite personalities of the brothers Robinson (Chris and Rich). Chris is a frontman on the level of Mick Jagger or Axl Rose. Or Liam Gallagher, and speaking of Oasis, the Crowes also share mirror the trajectory of the Brit-rock legends. Rich, on the other hand, is a quiet anti-star. And judging from long-time drummer Steve Gorman’s excellent tell-all Hard to Handle, the brothers fight. ALOT.
Yet somehow, they’ve managed to make a career of it, and there’s been a lot of great music beyond first 2 very well-known LP’s.
All things considered, the story is pretty simple: Atlanta-area brothers adore early R.E.M., start their own band in the late 80’s, attract some industry attention, get re-introduced to the Stones, transform their sound accordingly, and become perhaps the last of the legendary classic rock bands.
So let’s dive in to the Black Crowes’ discography!
ALBUMS
Everybody knows the first two Black Crowes records, but the truth is, the band only got better and better from there.
Shake Your Money Maker
Release Year: 1990
My Rating: A+
A veritable greatest hits collection for a first album. Just an unbelievably great debut, on par with the all-time great debuts like The Cars and Appetite for Destruction.

Release Year: 1994

The band’s 3rd LP may actually be their best, but most folks who owned Shake Your Money Maker have probably never heard it. That can be attributed to any number of things, but let’s face the music (see what I did there?): that album cover was a big stumbling block to the promotion of this record. It’s nothing but a case of self-sabotage, because Amorica is truly a stone-cold classic, from start-to-finish. It’s funny to think what might have been had the band simply chosen a different cover for the record. Total world domination. This collection is that strong. Alas, Amorica will forever remain one of the best kept secrets of rock and roll, so if you’ve never listened, do yourself a favor and check it out.

OTHER MAJOR RELEASES
Several live records here, including a Zeppelin “cover” record with Jimmy Page, and some great compilations with lost and alternate versions of songs. Hopefully the Crowes are just getting started with the reissues, because I know there’s a lot more out there.

Live at the Greek: Excess All Areas
Release Year: 2000
My Rating: A
Hard to argue with this – Jimmy Page plus peak Black Crowes playing classic Zeppelin tunes. The performances are brilliant, tight, and Chris Robinson does a great job channelling Robert Plant. I love Zeppelin, I love the Crowes. How could I not love this?
